There are many different scholarships to be earned by students pursuing a post-secondary education. The scholarships listed below are a few that have upcoming deadline dates (March and April). Come into the Guidance Department for more information.

National Book Award Nomination Form

The University of Toronto National Book Award Program recognizes and rewards the very best Canadian secondary school students, regardless of which university those students choose to attend. Every school across Canada is invited to nominate one (1) student on the basis of the qualities and criteria identified below. Students nominated for this award are also encouraged to submit an application to the National Scholarship Program at future.utoronto.ca/national.
Eligibility Criteria
National Book Award recipients are students who demonstrate superior academic performance, original and creative thought, and exceptional achievement in a broad context. They excel in academic pursuits, demonstrate enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and have a strong involvement in the lives of their schools and communities. The nominee must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, intending to begin university study in September 2017.
Award Value
Award recipients receive a National Book Award recognizing their achievements, and as a symbol of their academic potential. It is a non-monetary award. The National Book Award will be sent to your school in April, for presentation to the student at their secondary school graduation ceremony at the end of the school year.
Online Nomination Procedure
This form is to be completed by the secondary school Principal, Head of Guidance or designate. Your school may nominate one (1) student on the basis of the qualities and criteria identified above.

The Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers

The Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat is now accepting nominations for the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers.  The Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers is presented by the Lieutenant Governor to exceptional young volunteers, between the ages of 15 and 24.  Deadline for nominations is January 15, 2014.  Nomination forms and additional information about the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers and other programs is available at  www.ontario.ca/honoursandawards

Schulich Leader Scholarship:

Nominees can receive $60,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship
For Canadian Students who are enrolling in the STEM (Science.Technology.Engineering.Mathematics) areas of study at a minimum of one of the 20 participating universities.
 
Gonzaga Nomination Deadline - January 18th, 2016- all interested students must submit their application to Mr. Eagles in Guidance by this date.  The Scholarship Selection Committee will determine the school's nomination
 
Schulich Nomination Deadline - February 1st, 2015 - Gonzaga staff member must complete the on-line application for the Gonzaga Nominee
 
Shulich Nominee Application Deadline - February 28th, 2014 - the Gonzaga Nominee must submit a separate on-line application that will be sent directly to the universities they have submitted official applications to.

School Awards

The St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Secondary School gathered to honour the academic excellence of its students at the Academic Awards Ceremony on the evening of Thursday November 3rd, 2016.  Thanks to the entire Awards Committee for organizing this huge event.

 

Specialty Awards are granted by people and organizations outside of the school in recognition of students who have excelled in academic areas.

 

University of Waterloo Mathematics Contest:

The 2016 Pascal (Grade 9), Cayley (Grade 10), and Fermat (Grade 11) Contests were written by a total of approximately 60,000 students from over 1,400 schools. A Certificate of Distinction is awarded to students ranking in the top 25% of all contestants in Canada. A Medal is awarded to the top student (in each grade) at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School.

Catholic Education Foundation Award:
The Catholic Student Award is presented by the Catholic Education Federation of Ontario.  It recognizes young people who best exemplify the following Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations:

  • An effective communicator- spreading the gospel
  • A reflective, creative and holistic thinker – sharing ideas for the betterment of the world
  • A self-directed, responsible, life-long learner

The Principal’s Award is awarded to the students who have achieved the highest average in their grade.

Joe Hugel Award: (Certificate & $250.00)

 

The Dufferin-Peel Roman Catholic District School Board established the Joe Hugel Award in honour of its first Director of Education in 1983.  The award was given to a grade 10 student because government funding of the school system was limited to this grade in its early beginning.  The Awards Committee assumed the sponsorship of this award in June of 1996.  This award is given to the grade 10 student in every secondary school with the highest overall final average.

Through courses in the discipline of Technological Studies, students are given the opportunity to learn a variety of skills that will be useful to them in their everyday life or in their further education.  Any student wishing to pursue engineering, architecture or any of the technologies for post secondary study should seriously consider taking the technical courses.  All technical subjects are recommended for both females and males.

Courses

Hospitality and Tourism Technology, Grade10, Open                  TFJ201

This course emphasizes the scope of the hospitality and tourism industry. Students will study                    food origins, food-handling techniques and food preparation, health and safety standards, and the use                      of specialized tools and equipment. They will also investigate travel and tourism activities in Ontario,                        develop effective communication and management skills, and identify career opportunities in the                           hospitality and tourism industry.

Prerequisite: None

 

Hospitality, Grade 11 College Preparation                                    TFT3C1

This course helps students understand the features, trends, and guidelines of the hospitality                         industry, as well as learn the basic requirements of serving customers. Students will acquire skills                                 related to advanced methods of preparing and presenting food, evaluating facilities, controlling                                 inventory, and marketing special events. They will also learn about economic and environmental                            impacts, health and safety standards, and career opportunities related to the hospitality industry.

Prerequisite: None

 

Tourism, Grade 12, College Preparation                                       TFT4C1

            This course provides students with opportunities to analyse the characteristics and standards                        of the tourism industry, determine the factors that promote its success, and investigate principles and                        procedures that contribute to high-quality customer service. Students will also assess facilities and                               activities that attract tourists, and study communication and customer service techniques. In addition                         to exploring career opportunities, students will analyse the relationship between tourism and the                             economy and propose ways to enhance the performance of the industry.

Prerequisite: None    

 

Hospitality and Tourism, Grade 12, Workplace Preparation      TFH4E1

This course focuses on advanced food preparation and presentation skills; event and activity                        planning; the equipment and facilities used in the hospitality and tourism industry; and tourist attractions.                     Students will study the nutritional value of foods, plan menus and recipes, develop management techniques,                 design and implement an event, and learn effective communication skills. They will also explore careers,                  the impact of the hospitality and tourism industry of society and the environment, and health and safety          standards in the workplace.

Grade 12 students who have a homeroom spare - please pick up your registration form from the Guidance Office on or after October 20th.

 

 

Peel Regional Police is hosting their 5th annual Student Career Day.  This is a unique and exciting opportunity for our DPCDSB students to learn more about Careers in Policing.    Please review the following information and share it with students who have expressed a keen interest in Careers in Policing, for example, through Co-op and/or personal career counselling. 
 
Program Details:
DATE:                                    November 12, 2016
TIME:                                     8am-4pm
LOCATION:                            Emil Kolb for Police Excellence
                                               180 Derry Road East, Mississauga
AGENDA:                               Detailed agenda is attached to share with students.

**Please note that students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the center.  Students must be picked up no later than 4pm.
**Pizza lunch will be provided.
**Students will receive a certificate at the end of the day to add to their MyBlueprint portfolio.

Application Details:

1. DPCDSB has been allocated 2 spots per school.  Applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.  A waitlist will be kept through M. Biagi at the CEC. 

2. The program is open to grade 11 & 12 students.  First priority will be given to grade 12 students, however, grade 11 students are encouraged to apply.  In addition, students that have previously attended should NOT apply in order to allow for other students to have the opportunity.

3. Students who have shown a keen interest in careers in Policing should complete the following documentation in full, in order for their application to be considered.  Applications are due no later than October 28, 2016

Students will be notified of their acceptance by November 2, 2016 through their Guidance Counselor.

3. Use of Force Training
4. Forensic Identification
Students will also learn what the expectations are, if they want to become a Peel Regional Police officer.

Gonzaga House Events

Grade 9 Orientation Day

In August, the grade 9 student body is invited to Gonzaga to participate in an orientation program.  Students receive information regarding the school, rules, and expectations.  In addition, students will receive their schedules, agendas and lockers.

Grade 9 Retreat

In October, the grade 9 student body is bussed to the Croatian Centre in Norval to participate in their first secondary school retreat.  Students will participate in a number of house games competing against the other Gonzaga Houses.

Halloween Week

Each October, Gonzaga students participate in a number of Halloween activities and events.  Homeroom classes participate in a week long Halloween Trivia Contest.

Christmas Week

Each December, Gonzaga students participate in a number of Christmas activities and events.  Homeroom classes participate in a week long Christmas Trivia Contest.

Gonzaga House Olympics

At the end of May each year, all Gonzaga Students will have the opportunity to participate in the Annual Gonzaga House Olympics.   The Olympic day consists of a BBQ, Sport Tournaments (basketball, soccer, ball hockey), outdoor carnival games, video arcade, and three Teacher vs. Student games.  The cost per student is $10.00

House Leadership Gala

Every June, Gonzaga students are invited to attend the Annual House Leadership Gala.  Student leaders are awarded a variety of leadership awards, new Prefects are introduced, and the annual House Championship is presented.

X-Box Game Nights

Throughout the school year, Gonzaga students can sign up to compete in a variety of Game Nights which include:  Guitar Hero, Hockey, Football, Basketball, etc.

Gonzaga students will have the opportunity to participate in four intramural sport leagues.

Teams consist of 6 players per team.  Each team must complete a team registration form and pay a $30 league registration fee.

Gonzaga Big Brother/Sister Program:  All grade 9 students are matched up with a Gonzaga Prefect.  This senior student will act as a mentor and aid to the grade 9 student making the transition into secondary school.
